Date Night

I had a date on Sunday.  It was not a first date, or even the third date.  A specific plan was never established, but the general idea involved dinner and a movie, maybe some bar games if we felt like it.
I showed up in jeans, wellies, and a chambray button up.  My date opened the door and was wearing dress pants, a sweater, and a tie.
Apparently he was in the mood to go someplace nice.  His thought was since “You always look nice” I did not need to be alerted to the upgrade in venue.
Shoot.  The time I really go for casual totally backfired on me.
We went to dinner at the fancy place and still received excellent service and delicious food.  Halfway through the bottle of wine I stopped feeling bad about my outfit.
Word to the wise:  if you want to take your girl out to a nice place, tell her before she gets dressed.

Saying Yes

In the spirit of saying “yes” I have started giving out my phone number more when I am at a bar out and about.  Here is a story about what can happen when you give out your number to strangers.
My phone rang on Monday night around 6:30.  Since I get a lot of work calls forwarded to my cell phone, I picked it up.
“Hello, this is Megan.” Super professional.
“Hey Megan, how’s it going?” Friendly, feels more like a social call.
“Doing well, just on my way home from work, how are you?”  Buying time and trying to get a clue about who this is.
“Yeah, just heading home from class, I had a lab today, blah blah blah.”  Yeah, I have no idea who this is.
I kept asking questions so I did not have to embarrass myself  by asking “wait, who is this?” five minutes into the phone call.  I found myself admitting that I was free the next night.  To a total stranger.
He asked if we could go swing dancing for our date. Ding ding ding!  It was one of my dance partners from NYE.  He looked like Brad Pitt from 1993 and had his face painted like an Avatar (it was a thing at the bar that nhight) and he danced like he was in the movie Strictly Ballroom.  Oh, and he is 24.
I had ignored a text from him earlier this week asking the same question.  But then I realized that when a man invites you out dancing, you should say yes.

Princess in Training

So, I got this message today.

I am looking for a fun and intelligent woman, someone that have a good head on her shoulder and can be my princess, call xxx-xxx-xxxx.

I hopped right over to his profile to learn more.  He is very open about treating his women like a princess, but he does not go into details on what exactly princess treatment is.  So I emailed him:

Your profile does not have much information on it. You seem like a nice guy, What else are you looking for in a woman? How do you make her feel like a princess?

His response:

I like to take care of women and show her a good time, I want you to be yourself, if you want to talk call me at xxx-xxx-xxxx

Lame.  I wanted to hear details of oysters for breakfast and caviar for lunch.  He seems to be fishing for dirty pictures.

Should I call and finagle myself a date?  If he offers to take me to Applebee’s, I am going to decline.

Formula for Success

Admittedly it’s been a while since I have been on five dates with an individual.  This is the formula I have observed.

1st date: Cocktails (or coffee)
2nd date: Bowling (I now own my own bowling ball)

3rd date: Brunch

4th date: Fancier dinner, usually out, it can also be prepared at home

5th date:  "Watch a movie" at either of your houses

After that I would say that you have yourself a boyfriend and free rein to wear nothing but yoga clothes and eat takeout while watching Here Comes Honey Boo-Boo together.

Does anyone have any additions to the formula?

Does anyone need a non-formulaic suggestion?

How to ask someone out (on the internet)

I said yesterday that I had a date scheduled for next week, and now I have two dates!  I had two free evenings and so I booked myself another date.  It’s really not that hard.  I’ll clarify, finding a date on the internet is not that hard.  Asking out a real live person can be hard.  But for this purpose, it’s just a matter of writing someone back and saying:

“Hey, thanks for your message.  I looked at your profile and you seem (interesting, fun, like a good match).  Would you like to meet for a drink or coffee in the next few weeks?  Let me know.”

I see no point in exchanging a week’s worth of emails with a postage stamp sized photo.  Once contact has been made, it’s time to screen the match in person.

However, if you are initiating the first contact, you can’t ask them on a date right away.  That’s crazy.

There are really only two options for the first meeting, especially if it’s a blind date.  A drink.  Or coffee.  I have one of each next week.  It has been ages since I’ve meet someone for coffee after 11am.  Actually I think the last time I did that I was 17 and couldn’t get into the bars.  I actually am not a coffee drinker.  Is it too wimpy to order some herbal tea on that date?  I really can not handle caffeine.

If I was better at blogging I would insert a picture of one of those cute coffee cup pictures with the heart traced into the foam.  I am worried about copyrights.
